Upvāsa

Upāvrittastu pāpebhyo yastu vāso gunaih saha
Upavāsaha sa vigneyo na sharirasya shoshanam ||
“One who strives for the higher ideals while abandoning lower values, is said to observe an ‘upvāsa.
The upvāsa is not something that weakens or harms the body.”
Skanda Purana, Vaishnavakhanda, Maheya-Mahatmya, Chapter 12, Verse 30

The Sanskrit word upvāsa (उपवास) is composed of two words – “upa” and “vāsa”. “Upa” means near, or close, and ” vāsa” means dwelling or residing.
one could interpret upvāsa as a means of getting intimate with oneself by turning one’s attention inward. Upvāsa, a tradition in Navratri, is an opportunity for self-reflection and introspection. It’s a time to step back from the external world and contemplate our thoughts and actions.

Think of it as a minimalist retreat that intentionally simplifies our lives and reduces distractions, allowing us to connect with our inner selves. In today’s digital age, we’re constantly bombarded with notifications and social media updates, leaving us feeling disconnected and overwhelmed. Studies have shown that excessive screen time can lead to negative effects on our mental health, including increased anxiety and depression. By consciously practicing minimalism just nine days a month, we can find greater clarity in life and reconnect with our inner selves.

A dopamine detox is one such practice that can help us overcome our addiction to digital distractions. It involves taking a break from all things that produce dopamine, such as social media and video games. By rewiring our brains and finding satisfaction in life’s simple pleasures, we can discover a new sense of balance and fulfillment.

Reflect:
What is one distraction you could intentionally take a break from for just one day to find more clarity?
