We seek Control because we want things to go a certain specific way.
And we never willingly want to harm ourselves, do we? 🙂
So, we exercise control to ensure we get it 'right'!
But creativity by definition is doing something new.
And the new need not always be right.
Nature is the most creative of us all.
Look at what Nature has created over millions of years of creativity.
Jain scriptures claim there are 864,000 different types of organisms.
It's not the number that matters - but the fact that we would all agree that it seems directionally correct.
So how do you think Nature achieved that?
Darwin's theory of evolution says that the fittest survives.
But by extension it also means that the not-so-fit also perishes.
The dinosaurs were strong & fast & some could fly & swim too!
But they did perish.
And hence Nature's magnificent creations were proved unfit.
So by our definition, Nature failed 🙂
But that didn't stop Nature from trying & creating newer variations.
Or we would not be here.
Thank Nature for that! 🙂
So then to create one must be willing to be wrong.
And hence we must be willing to let go of control.
A simple exercise can help us observe our craving for control.
For 2 full minutes, we can look around and try to re-name every single object in front of us with a random, meaningless name.
Try it & see how your mind reacts.
See it feeling bad when it cant find a name.
Or how it feels relief when it's able to find a new series of names.
For example, I will rename all of these items as planets!
A predictable series of names which meets the 'rules' of the game and makes me 'correct'.
But it also shows my need to be RIGHT - which also fuels my need for control.
Maybe you can also observe the moment when the mind finally gives up as it cannot come up with new names.
You let go.
And in the moment, a truly random creative sound escapes your mouth as nature, LIFE, the mystery that is takes over - giving us a glimpse of what might be - ONLY IF we were truly willing to let go.
